There were several sixth graders who had artwork on display in the halls since they were in second or third grade. Thank you for helping us keep the halls of Switzer beautiful! There were also several sixth graders from one class that helped me create a beautiful piece of artwork for a special contest through the American Girl company, called "Elevate the Arts". Thank you to them for helping me create this awesome hot air balloon composition.

Students in sixth grade created these awesome prints showing radial symmetry out of styrofoam and ink. First we created two background papers using oil pastels to show concentric circles and other shapes. Then we made our own stamps out of a small square piece of styrofoam and a pencil. When both parts were complete, students inked up their stamps and printed them four times on each background, rotating the stamp 90 degrees each time they printed to create radial symmetry.
Students from all over the district presented their artwork at the annual K-12 Fine Arts Festival held at Ewell elementary this year. I was very proud to hand pick several amazing artists from Switzer to represent our school. It was great to see students and families supporting the arts on opening night and other times throughout the week. Here are some photos of Switzer students next to their creations.
The sixth graders learned about famous american artist, Keith Haring, before creating these fun cartoon paintings in his style. They had to take one of his famous drawings and change it two more times to create a triptych painting using bright colors and simple shapes. The sixth graders used lines and shapes just like Keith Haring to create movement in their artwork. If you would like to learn more about Keith Haring and his artwork you can visit this fun webpage: www.haringkids.com

The Sixth Graders created these symmetrical hearts with cut paper to show positive and negative space. Students were able to choose their own color of paper to create the heart and also drew original designs using mostly organic shapes.
Sixth Graders created these ornament compositions by using oil pastels for the tree branches to show texture and by using wet on wet watercolor techniques to make the ornaments look interesting. They focused on using analogous colors when painting so that the paints would flow together nicely. For the finishing touches, they used metallic paint to create a hook for the ornament and a small shine for a reflective look.
Sixth graders learned about intermediate colors, tints, and shades when creating these great color wheels. We started off with a shape repeated once and then twelve lines. Students had to paint the smallest shape like a normal color wheel and they had to mix their own intermediate colors with the primary and secondary colors. The second shape was the same colors mixed with black to create a shaded color wheel and the background was the same colors mixed with white to create a tinted background. The last step was to outline with black marker to define all the spaces.
Sixth graders created these amazing coil pots using clay coils from the extruder. They were able to layer several coils around a circle base to come up with interesting designs. After the clay had been bisque fired, the students were able to glaze their coil pots using a variety of colors. |
